Become a Pilot Start Your Journey
Earning a Private Pilot Certificate involves meeting specific knowledge and experience requirements set by aviation authorities. This generally includes a minimum of 40 flight hours, divided into 30 hours with an instructor and 10 hours of solo flight. It’s important to note, however, that few pilots complete their training in the minimum time, as the average is typically between 60 and 80 hours.
To meet the core requirements for a Pilot Certificate, you must:
Meet Age Minimums: Typically, you must be at least 17 years old to obtain a private license, though training can begin sooner.
Be Medically Certified: You must pass a physical examination to obtain a medical certificate from an authorized aviation examiner. The required class of this certificate depends on whether you plan to fly for recreation or as a profession.
Be Proficient in English: You must be able to read, speak, write, and understand the English language.
Operational Limitations: Be subject to operational limitations placed on your certificate by the aviation authority if physical conditions require it for safe flight.
Upon obtaining the Private Pilot License (PPL(A)), pilots are authorized to act as pilot-in-command of any single-engine piston aircraft (SEP) with a maximum take-off mass of up to 5,700 kg, provided the operation is conducted on a non-commercial basis. This qualification permits the carriage of passengers for leisure purposes, and the license maintains international validity.
The possibilities are limitless! You can take local sightseeing flights with friends and family or travel longer distances for business or leisure. Challenge yourself (and your stomach) by learning aerobatics for fun or competition. Build and pilot your own aircraft, or restore and fly vintage and classic planes. Join a flying club to connect with fellow aviation enthusiasts. You can also contribute to a growing number of flight organizations that support humanitarian efforts, such as disaster relief or non-emergency medical transport. Additionally, you can continue your training to earn a Commercial Certificate and pursue a career with an airline or as a corporate or charter pilot.
