Instrument rating

Gain the freedom to fly regardless of the weather. The Instrument Rating (IR) opens up an entirely new world of flying and is the next logical step after your PPL(A).

This qualification allows you to fly under Instrument Flight Rules (IFR), meaning you can fly in clouds or low visibility without visual reference to the ground. For private pilots, this means an end to weather cancellations and a massive increase in safety. For future professionals, the IR(A) is an essential requirement for an airline career.

Why Train IFR With Us?

IFR training requires precision and confidence in standard procedures, and our environment supports that development. From the first lessons you experience real instrument operations and communication in controlled airspace. A modern simulator helps practice complex situations efficiently. Well-equipped aircraft then allow for a smooth transition into actual IFR flying.

How the Training Works

The IR(A) course consists of two main parts, preparing you to safely manage a flight without outside visual references.

Theoretical Knowledge

Before beginning practical flights, you must complete the theoretical course. This covers 7 key subjects essential for IFR flight and concludes with official exams at the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA).

Practical Flight Training

The practical course for a single-engine Instrument Rating (IR/SEP) includes a total of 50 hours of instrument flight time. The EASA syllabus is designed for maximum efficiency by blending:

  • Simulator Training (up to 35 hours) In the simulator, we will focus on mastering Standard Instrument Departures, Standard Terminal Arrival Routes, holding patterns, various approach types, and emergency procedures.

  • Aircraft Training (min. 15 hours) You will then apply all the skills from the simulator in the real aircraft. This includes flying IFR cross-country routes to other airports, where you will execute real-world approaches in live traffic.

The course concludes with a practical skills test with a CAA-appointed examiner.

We don’t focus only on getting you through the Check Ride — instead, every moment in the air and on the ground is used to build real competence. Our goal is that you not only succeed in the exam, but grow into a confident, capable, and safe instrument-rated pilot.

  • Enhance your aeronautical decision-making
  • Gain deeper understanding of weather
  • Plan and navigate IFR routes
  • Fly using instruments alone, without outside visual reference

Expand your knowledge of aircraft systems
Refine aircraft handling in all phases of flight
Learn to operate effectively within the IFR airspace structure
Work with IFR clearances confidently

EASA Entry Requirements

To begin the modular IR(A) course, you must meet the following EASA requirements:

  • Hold a valid PPL(A) or CPL(A) licence.

  • Hold a valid NIGHT qualification.

  • Have logged at least 50 hours of cross-country flight time as Pilot in Command (PIC).

  • Hold a valid Medical Certificate (Class 1 or Class 2 with an audiometry endorsement).

  • Hold a valid ICAO English Language Proficiency certificate .

Ready to Fly Anywhere, Anytime?

The Instrument Rating will elevate your piloting skills and confidence to an entirely new level.
